Biography: Jacques d’Arthois was a Flemish landscape painter who was active mainly in Brussels. He favored wooded landscapes and often hired other painters to add figures to his work. Since few of his dated works survived, his development is hard to trace. His work is also often impossible to differentiate from the work of his brother Nicolas and his son Jean-Baptiste. Arthois made a good living as an established landscape painter but spent frivolously. He was briefly imprisoned for debt in 1658 and then died in poverty.
